IIW designed a new recreational trail that stretches through Lafayette County and Grant County, Wisconsin, and connected several existing trails in the communities of Belmont and Platteville. This development of this 10-foot wide ADA accessible trail included the rehabilitation of a former railroad bridge, a new bridge crossing of the Rountree Branch of the Little Platte River and a low water stream crossing.
Navigating through farm fields and former railroad structures, IIW analyzed several potential trail alignments to determine the most economical and feasible route for the trail, as well as to minimize impacts to endangered resources. IIW also met the desires of nearby landowners and relocated the trail next to existing property lines.
Early in the process, IIW worked with county officials to engage the public through community meetings, one-on-one meetings with adjacent property owners and regular meetings with a steering committee to coordinate and gain input from major stakeholders. Through these efforts, IIW helped the county select a route that will be completed when funding is available.
IIW’s breadth of services on this trail project included topographic survey, preparation of right-of-way plats, hydraulic analysis for sizing of drainage structures, wetland delineation, cost estimating, permitting, utility coordination, environmental report preparation, trail design submittals at 30 percent, 60 percent, and 90 percent, preparation of the design study report, final design, and submittal of documents for a WisDOT review prior to conducting a local bid letting.
The project also required a Section 106 historical and archeological survey, a Phase 1 Hazardous Materials Assessment, and an Environmental Report. Environmental coordination involves Section 4(f) and Section 6(f) environmental issues due to the previous purchase of portions of the former railroad corridor by the Wisconsin DNR with Land and Water Conservation Funds.
