Structural Engineering Summer Intern

Position Description

Assist with a variety of structural/architectural engineering design projects which includes commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings; bridges; and environmental facilities.  Employment term desired is for summer and/or fall semester.  Future permanent full time employment may also be available. 

Position Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering or Architectural  Engineering undergraduate or graduate academic program.
  • Desire to pursue a Master of Science Degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Completed course work related to structural engineering design.
  • Practical experience with AutoCAD preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients and staff.

Project Related Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of a Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Research design criteria including building codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide documentation of existing conditions.
  • Perform engineering assignments requiring application of engineering formulas, standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Prepare structural calculations incorporating hand calculations to support software results.
  • Prepare document review comments and detail sketches to convey the design intent. 
  • Develop design aids as productivity tools for staff use. (i.e. spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Assist support staff in producing construction documents using AutoCAD.
  • Review construction submittals for conformance with the contract documents.
